Orthopaedic Clinic

The orthopaedic specialist passed the specialist examination in orthopaedic surgery in 2013. His narrower field of expertise includes the surgical treatment of degenerative diseases of the hip and knee (arthroplasty – implantation of total hip and knee endoprostheses), sports injuries of the knee (particularly meniscal injuries, cartilage lesions, and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction), as well as injuries related to improper fitness training, especially involving the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle (labral injuries, rotator cuff injuries, SLAP lesions, biceps tendon injuries in the shoulder joint, and degenerative changes of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint), and disorders of the lumbar spine (disc herniation).

He is employed at Rožna Dolina Surgical Sanatorium and Dr. Franc Derganc General Hospital Nova Gorica, where he performs surgical procedures. In addition, he also provides specialist outpatient services at the orthopaedic clinic of Aristotel Medical Center.

Matic Ciglič, MD, Specialist in Traumatology, graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, in 2011. In 2019, he completed his specialist training in traumatology with distinction. His clinical work focuses on injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with a subspecialist focus on the treatment of knee and foot conditions and injuries, as well as sports injuries.

He has attended numerous national and international courses in his subspecialist fields, including joint reconstruction, ligament reconstruction, and regenerative treatment of cartilage injuries.

He is a member of SSAST (Slovenian Society for Arthroscopic Surgery and Sports Traumatology) and AO Trauma, one of the world’s leading professional organisations dedicated to the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries.

He is the author of professional and scientific contributions published in Slovenian and international journals and presented at professional conferences. He is also regularly involved in the education of students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, in 2017. He completed his medical internship in Novo Mesto and passed the professional examination in 2018. He completed part of his postgraduate clinical training at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana and part at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Novo Mesto General Hospital, where he later continued his professional career—initially as a ward physician, then as a resident, and currently as a Specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Under the mentorship of Dr Kavčič, he developed a particular focus on primary and revision joint replacement surgery. He further enhanced his expertise through professional training at specialist centres in Wiesbaden, Germany, and Graz, Austria.

In addition to joint replacement surgery, he specialises in the treatment of knee disorders, particularly the correction of lower-limb alignment deformities and knee instability. His professional interests and further development also extend to the field of regenerative medicine.

He is actively involved in research as an assistant and member of the research group at Novo Mesto General Hospital. He is also pursuing a PhD in the Biomedical Sciences doctoral programme.

He began his academic career as a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Novo Mesto and is also a member of the medical team at Trimo Trebnje Handball Club.

From 2017 to 2026, he worked at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, at the Clinical Department of Traumatology, within the Spine Surgery Unit. At the beginning of 2026, he joined Valdoltra Orthopaedic Hospital, where he currently works as a spine surgeon in the Department of Spine Surgery.

His clinical work focuses on the diagnosis, conservative treatment and surgical management of conditions and injuries affecting the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, as well as the spinal cord, including:

• Herniated discs

• Spondylolisthesis and spondylolysis

• Spinal stenosis

• Degenerative disc disease

• Acute spinal injuries and osteoporotic vertebral fractures

• Conditions following spinal and spinal cord injuries

At Valdoltra Orthopaedic Hospital, he performs modern minimally invasive spinal procedures using an operating microscope, particularly for the treatment of cervical and lumbar disc herniations. For spinal stabilisation and fixation using screws and rods, state-of-the-art computer-assisted navigation is used during surgery.

His research focuses primarily on spinal and spinal cord injuries. At the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, he introduced the use of intraoperative spinal cord ultrasound. He also participates in the international DISCUS research study under the auspices of the University of Oxford and the Wings for Life organisation.

He has further developed his professional expertise through numerous international training programmes and placements at renowned medical centres abroad, including in Austria (Salzburg and Graz), Germany (Charité Berlin and BG Unfallklinik Frankfurt am Main), the United States (Memorial Hermann, Houston), and Brazil (Rio de Janeiro).
