What exactly is an ultrasound?
Ultrasound diagnostics uses high-frequency sound waves to provide imaging that help identify various inflammatory processes, tumours, changes in the anatomy of organs, blood vessels, and other structures.
Ultrasound is a diagnostic examination that makes it possible to observe deep structures and organs in the body in a safe and non-invasive way.
It is used to examine organs and body tissues, any potential free intraperitoneal fluid and blood flow through the vessels without exposing the patient to radiation.
What exactly is an ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a mechanical oscillation at a frequency higher than the human ear can detect, i.e., above 20kHz. Medical ultrasound typically emits frequencies between 2 and 18MHz.
The key component of ultrasound is the ultrasound probe, which both transmits and received ultrasound waves. Once the ultrasound probe, placed on the body and directed towards the desired organ or body structure, it begins to emit ultrasound waves that travel to the specific organ and are reflected back or scattered.
The probe detects the reflected waves and converts them into elements on the screen, which are displayed as different shapes in white, grey, or black.
Structures which do not reflect ultrasound waves are displayed in black. These are called anechoic structures. They include, for example, fluids and fluid-filled organs.
