The problems that men don't talk about

Men are much less likely than women to be diagnosed with a mental disorder. Even when a specific disorder is identified, it is less likely that a man will decide to seek further help. Also telling is the fact that men are four times more likely than women to commit suicide.

Why do men not seek help for mental health issues or instead a much lesser extent compared to women?

A significant role is played by Social rules, i.e., specific established norms which result in men having an internal block against which prevents them from exposing their vulnerabilities. The fear and shame of being vulnerable, of needing support, is so strong that men would rather suffer in silence than look for help.

Even today, in our technologically and socially developed society, there is an unwritten rule that men are expected to be emotionally strong and not show any vulnerability.

Although, in recent decades, the society has progressed tremendously, the rule is still deeply rooted. Today, this is experienced particularly middle-aged men and those nearing retirement, or who have already retired. This generation of men was raised with a firm hand, characterised by profoundly rooted beliefs about men's emotions and vulnerability.
